August 1914. When war is declared, the painter Mathurin Méheut is in Japan with his wife. Two months later, he found himself in the front line, in the trenches on the Arras side. Every day, he never stopped drawing and painting. In the letters he sends to his wife and daughter, he recounts the cruelty of the fighting, the appalling living conditions, the pain of being separated from them.
